C-Days: preventing cybersecurity threats

By August 4, 2017August 8th, 2017No Comments

More than ever cybersecurity is a “hot theme”. In a world connected to millions of devices it’s important to keep updated with the latest cybersecurity threats and countermeasures.

This knowledge can be directly applied to our personal day to day practices and also directly at the client, even if we are not directly engaged on the security part of the project.

Security, like Performance, is usually left behind on the radar of any project implementation which leads to important negative consequences.

Two months ago, on the 21st and 22nd of June, Lisbon hosted one of the most important cybersecurity events: C-Days. For two days, specialists debated the latest trends about cybersecurity, threats, the use of the latest technology (such as the role of artificial intelligence) and the importance of human behaviour.

This year’s main subject was obviously focused on the rise of ransomware (especially due to the recent wannacry attack) but also the threat trends, through attacks to:

  • IOT devices
  • mobile devices,
  • autonomous cars
  • and state-to-state hacking

Security breaches could also be used for darker proposes: terrorism. States and law enforcement agencies have, currently, difficulty identifying and stopping, in useful time, the perpetrators of these type of attacks without breaking privacy/civic liberties laws. There are also other issues, such as state agencies, throughout the world, not collaborating in the same speedy manner. The laws differ from country-to-country and each has different levels of maturity on their cybersecurity frameworks.

It’s important to know not only the obstacles that Organizations are facing but also what we can, as individuals and as a company do help and to prevent these incidents.

It was a pleasant surprise to find out that there is a significant number of respected Portuguese people participating in international WarGaming/CTF (Capture the flag) competitions but we obviously need more talent that can contribute to enhancing our cybersecurity infrastructure.

The world is changing. There are new threats but technology is also helping us fight those threats. One example? Using Artificial Intelligence to automate cybersecurity. Using analytics to monitor social feeds, stabilize patterns and anomalies.

This is a matter that concerns everyone: Individuals, companies and governments. We all have a role in preventing cybersecurity threats.

What is C-Days?

C-Days is one of the main Portuguese conferences dedicated to cybersecurity, organized by CNCS – Centro Nacional de Cibersegurança which is the Portuguese state operational coordinator and national authority specialized in cybersecurity. It includes CERT that coordinates the response to incidents involving State entities and critical infrastructures.

This was the third edition of the event, which this year was held on the 21st-22nd June in Lisbon.

Additional information about the event:

Other security conferences:

  • Bsides Lisbon that will be held in Lisbon in November
  • European Security Conference (EuropeanSeC) next year in June which is the European extension of the Annual Security Conference that has been held in Las Vegas (USA) for over a decade
  • Segurex. Although this event is targeted at security in general (i.e. fire-fighting, workplace security, self-defence, etc) it also has some panels on IT security.
