2. Make Training Engaging (Not a Check-the-Box Exercise)

Supplement traditional compliance training with engaging approaches. Consider these practices:

Use real-life phishing simulations

When training feels relevant and engaging, employees actually retain the information and apply it.

At Crossjoin Solutions, we have a standing tradition of knowledge sharing. We don’t just talk about security culture—we live it.

Our weekly Security Special Interest Group brings experts together to discuss emerging threats and solutions. We foster knowledge sharing through dedicated ‘Brownbag’ sessions and boost engagement with quick quizzes that reinforce key concepts during Awareness sessions.

Through our Academy platform, we’ve been rolling out bite-sized microlearning modules covering cybersecurity alongside other crucial topics such as anti-bribery compliance. We’ve also established a secure reporting channel where employees can confidentially report Code of Conduct violations or security concerns without fear of repercussion.

Beyond traditional methods, we experiment with creative approaches like our popular ‘Cybersecurity Month’ video series and strategically placed interactive posters that turn passive wall decorations into engaging learning tools. By placing security materials in unexpected locations and adding gamification elements, we ensure security stays top of mind throughout the workday.

Digital citizenship is about being a responsible and ethical member of an online community. Some good practices can be easily applied to everyday life, and you can set a good example for others.

Fact-checking before you share is the most important thing you can do to make a positive impact. Misinformation spreads rapidly online, so verify its source and accuracy before sharing. Remember, always double-check your sources. Just because something sounds convincing doesn’t mean it’s true.

Sharing personal information online can have serious consequences. To protect your privacy and that of others, avoid posting your full address, phone number, or financial details. Even more importantly, never share personal information about others without their permission. Ask yourself: Would you share personal information with a random person on the street? If not, why share it online with millions of people? Think before you post: Could this information be used to identify or track someone?

Communicate respectfully online, the same way you would in person. Do no resort to cyberbullying, harassment, and personal attacks. Engage in constructive dialogue, even when you disagree. Remember: What happens online stays online forever.

Protect your accounts and data by using a password manager to create and store complex passwords. People aren’t good at creating hard-to-guess passwords (and then remembering them). Consider using passkeys, a safer way to sign in, using your fingerprint, face, or device PIN instead of passwords. Also, enable Multi-Factor Authentication whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification (like a code from your phone).

Stay informed to keep up with the constantly evolving digital landscape. Take responsibility for staying informed and adapting your online habits.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a part of our daily routines, from voice assistants to personalised recommendations and even automated decision-making tools. To use AI responsibly, you must first understand how it works and the data it relies on.

Be mindful of what information you share with AI-powered services. Some apps collect personal data to improve their performance. To protect your information, always review your privacy settings and opt out of unnecessary data collection when possible.

Ethical AI use also means recognizing and questioning biases in AI systems. Many AI tools are trained on data that may reflect societal biases, which can lead to unfair outcomes, such as discriminatory hiring practices or misleading information. Stay critical of AI-generated content, double-check important facts from reliable sources, and avoid spreading misinformation.

Finally, balance AI’s convenience with human judgment. While AI can enhance decision-making, it should not replace critical thinking or human connections.

IT costs are generally categorized into two main areas:

CAPEX (Capital Expenditure), which represents investments in changing or transforming the business.

OPEX (Operational Expenditure), which represents the costs of maintaining and running the business.
Crossjoin provides tailored services to address both areas. However, we often see significant benefits when tackling costs by acting in the opposite area.

For example, consider a solution in production that is not meeting its KPIs. Clients often prefer to completely redo the solution, leading to substantial investment in a new development project. When Crossjoin is involved, we focus on preventing these unnecessary costs by fixing what appears impossible to resolve. This approach reduces CAPEX costs by optimizing existing solutions instead of recreating them from scratch.

In the CAPEX area, over the past three years, we have supported clients in transformation projects by focusing on three key dimensions:

People

Processes

Technology

As we can talk client business language, as well with the cross-technology know-how from multiple technologies and well-known products, we leverage decisions to a well-sized IT in these 3 vectors.

To prevent future OPEX costs during these transformation initiatives, it’s essential to ensure that these three dimensions are well-aligned and properly scaled. With extensive experience in development, tuning, infrastructure, and client business operations, Crossjoin supports decision-making throughout transformation projects, ensuring IT investments are optimized and well-dimensioned.

Moving to the OPEX area, Crossjoin is often challenged to help clients reduce costs related to their existing infrastructure. This work typically involves 3 dimensions:

Reducing Costs with Legacy Systems
For example, optimizing MIPs in mainframe systems.

Optimizing On-Premises Infrastructure
Through tuning and optimization services, we help clients decommission assets, reduce resource usage, and redesign IT infrastructure to achieve “more with less.”

Application flows or migrations to the cloud and SaaS products.
Here, Crossjoin plays a crucial role in IT control by:

Ensuring cloud migration costs are well-managed and under control:

Providing proactive initiatives to reduce infrastructure costs;

Guaranteeing that SaaS products are customized and configured according to best practices.

By acting across these areas, Crossjoin effectively reduces both OPEX and CAPEX costs, leveraging our cost management framework to deliver tangible results for our clients.

Why Crossjoin Solutions

Depending on the level of maturity, but assuming a low level of maturity, for an infrastructure cost reduction initiative, you need someone who understands the bill and translates the cost to the infrastructure asset, then you need to calculate its contribution to the total, which requires financial proficiency in the client’s environment and its IT. In addition, you need to be able to technically analyze the asset to identify the reason for this cost. As there are several assets in various technologies, several teams are needed to carry out the analysis and identify reduction initiatives. They need to be planned, monitored and confirmed.
So instead of having many teams involved, making the process slow and the initiatives being implemented at a slow pace, Crossjoin does this end-to-end with very few dependencies, we can close the loop from the financial part, to the calculation, detailed analysis regardless of the technology and then change what needs to be changed to achieve the identified cost

Lack of Load Testing (41%): Many issues arise from insufficient scenario tuning and load testing, leading to unexpected performance bottlenecks.

Inefficient Software Architecture (18%): Poor architectural design can lead to cascading performance problems, requiring costly and time-consuming fixes down the line.

Infrastructure Sizing (13%): Although infrastructure is frequently considered the main cause of performance issues, inadequate sizing accounts for a smaller portion of problem

Most of the time, optimizing software architecture, coding practices, together with load testing can often address performance needs more effectively than increasing infrastructure spend.
These findings reinforce the need for a proactive approach to performance management that addresses root causes rather than defaulting to hardware or cloud upgrades as a primary solution.

Traditionally, performance management in large software projects is treated as an afterthought. The project progresses through its normal development cycle, and at a certain stage—usually after completing several development cycles—load and performance tests are conducted to determine if the system meets the “performance barrier.” This barrier assesses whether the current performance levels of the system are satisfactory for meeting user or client needs. If all goes well, the project advances to its next stages.

However, it’s unlikely for a large system to pass performance testing without issues. This leads to a few possible scenarios:

Tuning Performance Problems: This is probably the most common scenario. Detected performance issues often stem from a lack of performance-oriented coding practices and tools and must be addressed by carefully analyzing performance bottlenecks and retesting.

Structural Performance Problems: These issues are often the most challenging to resolve and typically originate from poor architectural design, inadequate tool and framework selection, or unsound software engineering practices.

Hardware Performance Problems: This occurs when hardware sizing has been inappropriately planned, requiring either a scaling down of performance targets or the procurement of hardware upgrades.

It’s also common for performance testing to be neglected, with problems only emerging after the system goes live. In such cases, operations and development teams must enter “firefighting” mode to manage the situation as effectively as possible.

Any of these scenarios is far from ideal, potentially leading to serious delays, increased costs, frustrated customers, and unusable systems. The severity of the impact depends on the type of performance issue encountered.

For example, identifying a structural performance problem at this stage could take months and significant resources to resolve, putting the entire project at risk.

It’s important to recognise that performance issues can arise at any time after the system goes live.

Performance management is not a one-time concern; it is an integral part of the software development lifecycle and must be considered in any serious development program. Introducing performance management early in the program— ideally before it starts — significantly reduces the likelihood of encountering performance issues later on.

Within the context of software development, performance management involves the continuous monitoring and improvement of various aspects of software performance throughout its lifecycle. This white paper explores why performance management is a critical, ongoing process and not merely a phase in the software project lifecycle.

Performance management in software projects encompasses the establishment and monitoring of performance metrics and benchmarks, aimed at ensuring and enhancing the functional and operational aspects of the software. Key concepts include efficiency, responsiveness, scalability, and reliability, which are vital for the success of any software application.

System Efficiency: System efficiency refers to the ability of a software system to perform its functions accurately and quickly, while utilising minimal resources such as CPU, memory, and disk space. Efficient software systems execute tasks in a timely manner without wasting resources. This involves optimizing algorithms, reducing unnecessary computations, and minimizing resource consumption to ensure optimal performance.

Responsiveness: Responsiveness pertains to how quickly a software system reacts to user input or external events. A responsive system provides timely feedback to user actions, ensuring that users do not experience significant delays or lags when interacting with the application. This involves designing interfaces and processing logic to prioritize user interactions and minimize latency, ensuring a smooth and interactive user experience.

Scalability: Scalability refers to the ability of a software system to handle increasing workload or user demand without compromising performance or functionality. A scalable system can efficiently accommodate growing data volumes, user traffic, or concurrent users by gracefully expanding resources or distributing workload across multiple servers or resources. This involves designing architecture and components in a way that allows for easy horizontal or vertical scaling as needed.

Reliability: Reliability denotes the ability of a software system to consistently perform its intended functions accurately and predictably, without failures or errors. A reliable system operates as expected under normal conditions and gracefully handles exceptions or failures, ensuring uninterrupted service for users. This involves implementing robust error handling, fault tolerance mechanisms, and rigorous testing practices to identify and mitigate potential failures or issues that could impact system reliability.

Before a program starts, it’s crucial to ensure that the program’s functional and technical objectives are aligned with its performance goals. This alignment should be considered not only from a technical architecture perspective but also from budgetary, monitoring, and observability standpoints:

Performance, Scalability, Security & Reliability Requirements: Identifying key requirements for performance, scalability, security, and reliability is fundamental for a successful program. These requirements can be incorporated into the program’s RFP (Request for Proposal) or, for in-house development, into the technical architecture and hardware specifications. The primary benefit of establishing these requirements upfront is to encourage all stakeholders to consider the system’s performance envelope in all program activities. For example, should the CI/CD pipeline include regular load and performance tests? What are the budget implications? Who is responsible for developing these tests, what data will be used, what hardware and tools are required, …?

Observability Requirements: True end-to-end performance understanding comes from comprehending the performance of each system component, including hardware metrics, database behavior, component APIs, workflows, microservices, apps, and front-ends. These components, often a mix of off-the-shelf and custom developments, require end-to-end monitoring for full observability, achievable through market software or in-house development, often representing a project in its own right.

Tool Selection: Choosing foundational tools for the program must account for performance requirements. Often, selected tools may have inherent limitations in throughput, design, or architecture, or may not have been tested against the program’s processing requirements. These foundational choices must be fit for purpose.

KPIs to Measure: Performance KPIs define what ‘done’ looks like for the performance aspect of the program. They enable objective discussions around performance with vendors and internal teams by allowing them to test software against these KPIs.

Performance Budget: Performance-related activities need dedicated budgeting. If performance considerations are secondary, this aspect of the budget will likely be insufficient, potentially necessitating additional funds for program completion. Budget considerations should cover the performance team, hardware environment for performance testing, observability projects, etc.

PoC Implementation: For many programs, specific Proofs of Concept (PoCs) are necessary to verify that selected tools and architectures can meet performance targets. This validation should occur before tool selection and development commencement.

Architecture Design: A specific area of architecture design should focus on performance, addressing how the technical architecture will meet performance, scalability, security, and reliability requirements beyond just functional needs.

Team and Capacity Planning: Incorporating performance “by design” requires careful planning and budgeting for design, development, testing, and operation within the system’s maximum performance envelope.
